J&J Facing Lawsuits for Marketing Risperdal for Off-label Uses in Children

J&J Facing Lawsuits for Marketing Risperdal for Off-label Uses in Children

Corpus Christi, TX, January 24, 2012 - Thomas J. Henry Injury Attorneys urge parents, foster parents, and guardians whose children were given Risperdal for an off-label use to contact an attorney as soon as possible if their child developed any of the following injuries/side-effects: diabetes, male breast development, pituitary tumors, or involuntary movement disorders. The manufacturers of the antipsychotic drug Risperdal have been sued in several states for marketing the drug for off-label uses in children.

In 1993, the FDA approved Johnson & Johnson’s antipsychotic drug Risperdal to treat schizophrenia in adults. It was not until more than 10 years later that the drug was approved to treat children and adolescents. In 2006, Risperdal was granted approval for the treatment of irritability from autism in children ages 5-16. In 2007, the drug was granted further approval to treat schizophrenia (in ages 13-17) and bipolar disorder (in ages 10-17).

Since its original approval in 1993, doctors have been prescribing Risperdal for off-label, unapproved uses in children, including for ADHD and other behavioral disorders. This practice of off-label prescribing exposes children to the drug’s harmful life-threatening side-effects without concrete proof/evidence of benefit, since the safety and efficacy of the drug has only been established for the uses/age groups approved by the FDA.

“We’ve seen child after child suffer the life-altering effects of Risperdal….many of these children were prescribed this medication for conditions that have not been tested or approved by the FDA,” Thomas J. Henry.

The manufacturers of the Risperdal are being sued in several states for marketing off-label uses of the drug in children. The most recent cases ended with a $158 million settlement in Texas, a judgment of $327 million in South Carolina, and a jury award of $ 257.7 million to Louisiana. Cases in other states, including Arkansas, are in various stages of litigation.

Thomas J. Henry Injury Attorneys is currently accepting Risperdal cases for evaluation. If your child has suffered as a result of off-label prescribing of Risperdal, you may be entitled to financial compensation. Contact Thomas J. Henry Injury Attorneys today for a free case review.  Our attorneys are available 24/7, nights and weekends.
