On Tuesday, (March 10, 2012) the FDA announced that popular birth control drugs containing drospirenone may carry an increased risk of blood clots and will require new warning labels.
“The revised drug labels (Beyaz, Safyral, Yasmin and Yaz) will report that some epidemiologic studies reported as high as a three-fold increase in the risk of blood clots for drospirenone-containing products when compared to products containing levonorgestrel or some other progestins, whereas other epidemiological studies found no additional risk of blood clots with drospirenone-containing products,” FDA Drug Safety Communication [4/10/12].
FDA Warning on Birth Control Drugs
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, updated labels will inform users that birth control pills, which include products such as Bayer’s Yaz or Yasmin, carry up to a tripled risk for blood clots compared to other birth control pills.
Contraceptives containing drospirenone have been successfully marketed on the premise that they have fewer of the unwanted side effects of older hormone pills such as:
