Defective Child Car Seat

Motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death among children in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics, 968 children ages 14 years and younger died as occupants in motor vehicle crashes, and approximately 168,000 were injured in 2008.

When parents purchase a product, such as infant, toddler, or child car seat, they expect the product to keep their child safe. However, there are many times when these car seats fail. Sadly, they often fail when you need them most – at the time of the accident.

Numerous car seat recalls are issued each year. In fact, back in 2003, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recalled as many as four million infant car seats/carriers, manufactured by Century Products, because of handle-related problems. Century had received over 200 injury reports, including concussions, skull fractures, and lacerations.

Common Causes of Car Seat Injuries

  • Straps made from low quality materials which tear too easily or are highly flammable
  • Faulty latches that come undone when mild force is applied
  • Latches that are too difficult to undo, making it hard to remove the child during an emergency
  • Weak frames or cushions that come undone too easily
  • Faulty strap adjusters, making the straps too loose or too tight
