Emergency Eye Damage

Eye injuries are growing throughout children of all ages due to contact lenses, eyeglasses, and eye protection devices. In a recent study by the American Academy of Pediatrics, contact lenses accounted for most emergency department visits where a medical device was associated. In fact, there were over 45,000 children throughout a period of 24 months who went to the emergency room because of an eye related injury.

Causes of Eye Injuries

The National Society to Prevent Blindness states that about one-third of eye loss in children younger than the age of 10 is from injury to the eye. Many of these injuries occur from chemicals, toys, fingernails, contact lenses, BB guns, and athletic activities such as hockey, archery, darts, boxing, and other sports-related activities.

Symptoms and Types of Eye Injuries

  • Corneal Abrasions
    • This injury is caused by a scratch or injury to the dome shaped surface that covers the front of the eye. This injury is quite common in children. When foreign objects, such as contacts, have contact with the surface of the eye, an abrasion can occur.
  • Chemical Burns
    • Household chemicals are a common cause of this type of injury and must be treated immediately. Chemical burns can result in a loss of vision and even a loss of the eye itself.
  • Hyphema
    • This refers to blood in the chamber of the eye.
  • Bruising or Black Eye
  • Fractures of the Orbit
    • This refers to when one or more bones surrounding the eye are broken. Depending on where the fracture is located, it can be associated with severe eye injury and damage.
  • Eyelid Cuts
  • Foreign Objects
    • This refers to any objects that are in the eye that are not meant to be there.
  • Blood in the Eyeball
  • Changes in the shape of the iris or pupil
