Accutane Lawsuit Information
Accutane, also known as Isotretinoin, is a popular acne medication which was developed by the Hoffman LaRoche Company in 1982.
Since Accutane's release, it has been used by over 16 million people across the world. It has also appeared in other prescription forms such as Amnesteem, Claravis, Decutan, Istane, Sotret, Ratane, Raccutane, and the generic Isotretinoin.
In 2009, dermatologists found that those being treated with Accutane for mild cases of acne or patients who took Accutane for an extended amount of time were suffering from serious and sometimes irreversible side effects. These side effects included Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Crohn's Disease, and Colitis.
While many of these diseases are similar, they affect different parts of the digestive system. For example, Ulcerative Colitis causes swelling and the formation of ulcers on the large intestine, but patients with Crohn's disease will experience thickening of the intestinal wall.
Other side effects of Accutane include:
- Weak Skin
- Birth Defects
- Back Pain
- Joint Pain
- Dry Mucas Membranes
- Pink Eye
- Vision Problems
- Liver Damage
- Chest Pain
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Skin Infections
- Stomach and Intestinal Discomfort
- Bone Loss
- Heart Attack
- Stroke
- Seizures
- Lowered White Blood Cell Count
The FDA now requires a Black Box warning on all isotretinoin products, including Accutane. Please remember that pregnant women taking are urged to discontinue the use of Accutane while pregnant as Accutane may cause severe birth defects, including mental, visual or auditory impairment.
