The Effects of Paxil

Since approval in 1992, Paxil has become one of the most popular antidepressants on the market. In July 2006, the FDA discovered a number of serious side effects. These side effects include various birth defects and persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) in newborns.

PPHN is a rare condition that can cause death. Babies born with PPHN have abnormal blood flow through the heart and lungs and do not get enough oxygen to their bodies. This abnormal blood flow may then cause them to suffer from heart failure, seizures, kidney failure, and many other conditions.

The FDA has stated that women who use Paxil during pregnancy are "6 times more likely to have persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) than infants born to mothers who did not take antidepressants during pregnancy."

Some birth defects that may be caused by the use of Paxil include:

  • Hypoplastic Left Heart (HLHS)
  • Pulmonary Atresia
  • Tricuspic Atresia
  • Transposition of the Great Vessels
  • Pulmonary Stenosis
  • Atrial Septal Defect (hole in the heart)
  • Ventricular Septal Defect (hole in the heart)
  • Coarctation of the Aorta
  • Tetralogy of Fallot
  • Double Outlet Right Ventricle
  • Persistent Truncus Arteriosus
  • Interruption of the Aorta
  • Double Inlet Left Ventricle
  • Double Aortic Arch
