Permax and Dostinex Linked to Heart Failure

Eli Lilly & Co.’s Permax (peroglide) and Pfizer’s Dostinex (cabergoline) are two prescription medications that treat tremors related to Parkinson’s disease and restless leg syndrome. Studies have shown that these drugs, which are classified as “ergot-derived dopamine receptor agonists,” may cause fatal heart valve damage which can lead to heart failure and sudden death.

New England Journal of Medicine Studies

Two studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2007 found that patients taking Permax and Dostinex had a higher risk of experiencing heart valve damage than those taking other therapies.

The first study, which was conducted in Britain, found that patients taking the highest recommended doses of Permax had a 37 times greater risk of developing heart valve damage than patients taking other therapies. Patients taking the highest recommended dose of Dostinex had a 50.3 times greater risk of heart problems.
The second study, conducted in Italy, found that 23.4% of those taking Permax and 28.6% of those taking Dostinex suffered heart valve damage compared to only 5.6% of those in the control group.
