Fatal Side-Effects Linked to Plavix

Plavix (clopidogrel bisulfate) is a blood-thinning medication often prescribed in conjunction with low dose aspirin to prevent heart attack in high-risk patients. Approved by the FDA in 1997, Plavix is the sixth top selling drug in the United States.

In recent years, a number of lawsuits have been filed against the makers Plavix claiming they failed to warn patients about serious side-effects including fatal bleeding, heart attack, stroke, and death associated with the drug.

Plavix Side Effects

  • Fatal hemorrhaging
  • Gastrointestinal & Cerebral Bleeding or Ulcers
  • Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP)
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Death

Plavix and Aspirin

In October 2011, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) halted part of a stroke-prevention study when it became clear that the combination of Plavix and aspirin was linked to significantly increased rates of bleeding and death compared to aspirin alone. Specifically, researchers found that using the combination Plavix and aspirin nearly doubled the risk of death, heart attack, or stroke in patients with no history of heart disease.

Plavix and Gastrointestinal Bleeding

In 2005, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that for heart patients with a history of bleeding ulcers, Plavix was much more dangerous than an aspirin-based treatment. The study found that patients taking Plavix experienced more than 12 times as many bleeding ulcers as patients who received aspirin combined with a heartburn drug.
