Asbestos Injuries and Illnesses

Illness from Asbestos exposure can affect individuals working in a variety of trades and professions. Workers who have been exposed to asbestos are often left with permanent lung ailments including Asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. Symptoms related to asbestos exposure can take anywhere from 10 to 50 years to appear, but once they do, the prognosis is often grim. Those at risk for developing asbestos-related illness include:

  • Navy veterans
  • Shipyard workers
  • Construction workers
  • Automotive technicians
  • Aerospace workers
  • Textile workers
  • Railroad workers
  • Demolition workers
  • Plant workers
  • Firefighters

Asbestosis

Asbestosis is a disease in which asbestos fibers inflame the lungs and cause scarring. This causes difficulty breathing and can lead to chest pains, as the heart works harder to pump oxygen to the rest of the body.  The scarring may eventually become so severe that the lungs can no longer function. Asbestosis often takes 10–20 years to show signs/symptoms of full development.

Mesothelioma

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare type of asbestos lung cancer that results from asbestos fibers becoming lodged in the lining of the lung. This leads to the formation of malignant tumors which can grow rapidly, spread to other organs, and cause death. Mesothelioma can take 20-50 years to show signs/symptoms of full development.

Lung Cancer

Cancer of the lung has also been linked to asbestos exposure. Cancer caused by Asbestos has the same symptoms, treatment, and prognosis as other forms of lung cancer, and often takes 15-30 years to show signs/symptoms of full development.
