Benzene and Cancer
Benzene is a clear, non-corrosive and highly flammable liquid used primarily to make other chemicals and plastics. It was classified as carcinogen (known cancer-causing substance) by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 1980.
Benzene is widely used in the United States and it ranks in the top twenty chemicals for production volume. Unfortunately, for the more than three million workers exposed to Benzene each year, the substance can cause life-threatening blood disorders and cancers.
Acute Myelogenous Leukemia
Benzene exposure can occur through inhalation or skin absorption. Short-term, high-level exposure can cause drowsiness, dizziness, unconsciousness, and death. Long-term exposure can affect bone marrow and blood production and cause Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML).
Benzene Exposure
According to Cancer.org, people can be exposed to Benzene at work, in the general environment, and through the use of certain consumer products.
