1 Dead, 1 Injured in Construction Accident
One worker was killed and another was injured Monday (June 11, 2012) afternoon in a grout explosion at a tunnel construction site near Lake Mead in Las Vegas, Nevada.
According to reports, the tunnel had been created to provide a third alternative drinking source to Las Vegas residents. Construction had begun at the site in 2009; however, it was constantly held up due to problems with flooding and cave-ins.
Details of the Construction Accident
- The two workers were working in a 3-foot-diameter tunnel near Lake Mead National Recreation Area when the construction accident occurred.
- In the course of their work, parts of the tunnel ring became loose, releasing pressure and causing the grout material to explode.
- One of the construction workers was killed instantly. The second worker was also injured.
- The accident remains under investigation.
