1 Dead, 1 Injured in Houston Collision

One person was killed an another has been hospitalized after two vehicles collided head-on along a Houston freeway last week.

About the Houston Head-On Collision

According to the Houston Chronicle, a driver entered Houston’s South Freeway traveling the wrong direction on Thursday night and collided with another motorist.

The accident occurred on Highway 288 around 9 p.m. The driver of a blue Honda Civic was traveling south in the Northbound lanes and collided head-on with a red Dodge Journey.

The Honda driver died on the scene while the Dodge driver was rushed to the hospital in unknown condition. The freeway was closed for hours while they cleared the road.

Investigators are unsure how long the Honda driver was traveling in the wrong direction before the collision occurred.

The following information was provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT):

  • 3,534 people were killed in auto accidents in Texas in 2014 – a 3.7-percent increase over the 3,408 deaths reported in 2013.
  • 581 of the fatalities recorded in 2014 were associated with head-on collisions.
  • An additional 237,941 people were injured in auto accidents with 17,152 people suffering serious injuries.
