1 Dead, 2 Hurt in Ft. Lauderdale Construction Accident

One worker was killed on Monday, and two others were hurt, after a beam collapsed at a construction site in Fort Lauderdale.

Details of the Fort Lauderdale Accident

According to the Sun Sentinel, the accident occurred just before 8 am Monday at the future site of a car dealership.

Fort Lauderdale police report that a beam at a construction site collapsed at 2601 S. Andrew Avenue, striking the three workers.

The three workers were rushed to Broward Health Medical Center. One worker was pronounced dead while the other two remain hospitalized – one in critical condition.

Authorities are investigating the incident. This marks the fifth death to be recorded on a Broward County worksite in seven weeks.

  • In 2012, 4,628 workers were killed on the job – this averages to 89 deaths a week or more than 12 deaths a day.
  • 4,175 of those deaths occurred in private industry with 806 deaths being linked to construction incidents.
  • 54 percent of construction fatalities were linked to four causes:
    • Falls
    • Struck by Object
    • Electrocutions
    • Caught-in/between
