1 Dead, 2 Injured in Morganton Work Zone Crash

Two workers were injured and one worker was killed early Friday morning when a pickup plowed into a work crew that was working on a paving project in Morganton, North Carolina.

About the Fatal Morganton Accident

According to WSOC-TV, the incident occurred along Interstate 40 near the Highway 18 interchange around 2 am.

Police state that driver Timothy Robinson veered into a closed lane of traffic and barreled through a section of construction cones before hitting the three workers. One of the workers, Flavio Jaimes, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two other workers were transported to area hospitals. Their condition has not been released.

  • Of those crashes:
    • More than 500 were fatal
    • 26,282 resulted in injuries
    • 60,448 resulted in property damage only
  • About 70 percent of road construction site deaths recorded between 2003 and 2007 occurred between the 8 am and 4:59 pm.
