1 Dead, 3 Injured in New York Tugboat Accident
Officials are investigating a fatal tugboat accident that occurred near Long Island on Saturday.
About the Tug Boat Incident
The Coast Guard dispatched a fleet of rescue boats and a helicopter in response to a notification sent by the Sea Bear to a vessel service stating that it had begun taking on water.
The Coast Guard recued three crew members from the near freezing water after a 45 minute search. The fourth member’s body was found without an immersion suit.
Officials have not determined the cause of the sinking.

- According to American Boating, the U.S. Coast Guard recorded 4,515 accidents among recreation boaters alone in 2012.
- These accidents resulted in 651 deaths, 3,000 injuries, and nearly $38 million dollars in property damage.
- Nearly 71 percent of all fatal boating accident victims drowned. Of those, roughly 85 percent were not wearing a life jacket.
- 70 percent of boaters who drowned were aboard a vessel under 21 feet in length.
