1 Dead and At Least 4 Injured in NYC Bus-Truck Collision

Early reports from the New York Police Department have confirmed that one person is dead and at least four others are injured following a collision between a box truck and a city bus.

About the Fatal Bus-Truck Accident

KRIS-TV reports that a box truck, believed to be stolen, collided with a Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus around 5:30 am Monday, sending both vehicles over the sidewalk and into scaffolding.

Police have confirmed that the driver of the bus, William Pena, was killed in the collision, and at least four of other people were injured.

Authorities state that only two passengers were on the bus at the time of the accident, and the other injuries involved the truck driver and a coffee cart vendor.

The area around the collision has been closed, and authorities are still investigating the scene.

Bus and Truck Accident Statistics

  • According to a 2013 report by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, both trucking accidents and bus accidents seem to be on the rise.
  • The report indicates that large trucks and buses were involved in 3,568 fatal accidents in 2011, killing 4,018 people. These numbers are up from 3,512 fatal accidents claiming 3,957 lives in 2010 and 3,193 fatal collisions which killed 3,619 in 2009.
  • Additionally, another 112,000 people suffered serious injury as the result of large truck and bus accidents in 2011 – 88,000 attributed to truck accidents and 24,000 to bus accidents.
