1 Dead in Chicago Construction Accident

Authorities in Chicago are investigating the death of a construction worker who was fatally injured after falling 16-stories at a job site.

About the Fatal Construction Accident

According to ABC 7 Eyewitness News, the man was working on top of 16-story construction site when he fell – authorities were called to the scene shortly after 9:15 am Monday.

The accident occurred at a project at Hyde Park Boulevard and Lake Park in Chicago’s South Side. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Construction Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA):

  • A total of 4,585 workers were killed on the job in 2013. This averages to more than 12 worker deaths every day.
  • 4,101 of those deaths occurred in private industry, and 828 deaths were associated with accidents at construction sites.
  • Among the leading causes of construction related dates are falls, struck by object, electrocutions, and caught-in/between; these make up more than half of construction worker deaths each year
  • Falls made up 36.5% of these “Fatal Four” deaths in 2013, and “fall protection – construction” was the top most commonly cited standard in the fiscal 2014 year by OSHA.
