Kayla Rouser3 years ago

49-year-old Michael E. Myers of Bald Knob, Arkansas was found dead at the Arkansas Steel Associates plant in Newport.

About the Newport Plant Fire

According to Jackson County Sheriff David Lucas, one other person was sent to the hospital to be treated for shock. An estimated 38 tons of liquid steel spilled in the melt shop of the facility, due to a faulty cable on the crane system, as the kettle of liquid steel was being moved.

It’s reported that after the spill, the facility caught fire, killing Myers. Crews with the Newport Fire Department, Diaz and Grubbs Fire Departments responded to the scene.

According to KAIT 8 ABC, this is not the first workplace incident to happen at that Arkansas Steel plant. In 1991 they were cited for one serious violation after an employee was run over by a forklift.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports a worker died in 1999 when he was hit by molten metal, igniting his clothing. The company was cited for 2 more serious violations after that accident as well.
