1 Dead in San Marcos Trucking Accident

One person is dead and several others are injured following a multi-vehicle accident in San Marcos, Texas Tuesday afternoon.

About the Fatal San Marcos Accident

According to the Austin American-Statesman, the incident occurred around 3:30 pm when several tractor-trailers and passenger cars collided in the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 near the San Marcos outlet stores.

Preliminary reports indicate a gravel truck lost control when trying to slow down for a previous accident. The vehicle sideswiped two other 18-wheelers and two passenger vehicles before crashing into the concrete divider and then a final passenger vehicle.

By the end of the event, eight cars had been damaged, three were engulfed in flames, four people were transported to Central Texas Medical Center, and one person was dead.

Authorities continue to investigate the accident.

  • Based on reportable crash data for 2013, TxDOT estimates:
    • One person was killed in a traffic collision in Texas every 2 hours and 36 minutes.
    • One person was injured every 2 minutes and 16 seconds.
    • A reportable crash occurred every 71 seconds.
