1 Dead in Texarkana Motorcycle Crash

On motorcyclist is dead and another remains hospitalized following a crash along Mall Drive in Texarkana, Texas.

About the Texarkana Motorcycle Accident

According to KETK, the incident occurred around 5:00 pm Sunday when a van driven by 73-year-old David Wood pulled in front of the motorcycle while making a turn onto Mall Drive from Fair Oaks Drive.

The driver of the motorcycle, Gary Thacker, 52, attempted to avoid the van, but still collided with the vehicle. Both Thacker and his passenger, Hazel Laferny, were thrown from the motorcycle.

Paramedics rushed Thacker and Laferny to a local hospital, but Thacker died from his injuries shortly after arriving. Laferny is currently listed in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.

Authorities are still investigating the incident.

  • 3,377 people were killed in traffic collisions in 2013 – down 1.05 percent from the 3,413 deaths recorded in 2012.

  • 495 motorcyclists (operators and passengers) were killed in crashes in 2013. 53 percent of those killed were not wearing helmets when the collisions occurred.
  • Using available crash data for 2013, TxDOT estimates:
    • One person was killed in a traffic accident in Texas every 2 hours and 36 minutes.
    • One person was injured in a traffic accident every 2 minutes and 16 seconds.
    • A reportable crash occurred every 71 seconds.
