1 Injured in Houston Trucking Accident

One person has been hospitalized following a violent trucking collision along the Sam Houston Tollway in Harris County.

About the Houston Trucking Accident

According to the Houston Chronicle, one person was injured after a tractor-trailer smashed a sports utility vehicle against a retaining wall along the Sam Houston Tollway around 5:45 am.

Officials stated that a Chevrolet Tahoe was pinned against the wall by an 18-wheeler near Bammel North Houston, but were unclear as to what lead up to the collision.

Two people were inside the SUV at the time of the accident – one was hospitalized due to their injuries.

Traffic was congested for miles until debris was finally cleared at 7:45 am.

Trucking Accident Statistics

Following information provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • 3,921 people were killed in trucking accidents in 2012, marking a 4 percent increase from 2011 when 3,781 trucking accidents were recorded.
  • Of those killed:
    • 697 were occupants of large trucks
    • 2,843 were occupants of other vehicles
    • 381 were non occupants including pedestrians and pedalcyclists.
  • NHTSA recorded an additional 104,000 injuries in 2012 marking an 18 percent increase from 88,000 recorded in 2011.
  • Trucking accidents were most common on weekdays during the daytime hours.
