Details of the Manhattan Crane Accident
The unit struck the 30-story building it was intended to be installed in, causing debris, as well as the unit, to fall to the ground.
No life-threatening injuries have been reported, but ten people suffered minor injuries. Luckily, it occurred on a Sunday when there was less foot traffic and therefore less people were affect.
The crane is owned by Bay Crane, a Queens-based company.
Crane Accident Statistics
The following information was provided by the National Center for Construction Research and Training:
- Between 1992 and 2006, there were 323 construction worker deaths associated with crane accidents.
- There were 307 crane incidents between 1992 and 2006.
- 4% of those accidents involved overhead cranes.
- 5% involved tower cranes.
