Tina Robinson3 years ago

The Orlando Sentinel is reporting a hit-and-run accident in Winter Park, FL that caused a vehicle to crash into a daycare center. Initial reports say at least 12 people were injured in the accident.

Details of the Hit-and-Run Accident

Preliminary reports from Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) say the accident happened around 3 p.m. Wednesday. A silver or gray Dodge Durango collided with a vehicle, forcing that car into a nearby daycare center.

Police say the Durango fled the scene of the accident. The vehicle is believed to be damaged and missing the front bumper.

At least 12 people, including 11 children, were injured in the accident. Some of the victims are believed to be in serious condition. An initial report from FHP said one person had died. That report has not been confirmed.

Victims were taken to five area hospitals for treatment. Roads surrounding the area have been closed while police investigate the accident.

The Goldenrod Road daycare center is one of 1,700 KinderCare Learning Centers located in 39 states.

Fatal Hit-and-Run Statistics

A report by USA Today in November 2013 explains that hit-and-run accidents rose more than 13% from 2009 and 2011. The report says alcohol is a major factor in fatal hit-and-run accidents and that 60% of victims are pedestrians. In 2011, there were 1,449 fatal hit-and-run accidents nationwide.
