13-Year-Old Girl Killed in New York Pedestrian Accident

A CBS affiliate has reported that a 13-year-old girl was killed Saturday after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Levittown, New York.

Authorities in New York are looking for a driver who hit a 13-year-old girl and sped away.

The girl, who had down syndrome, had left her house unnoticed and wandered to the Hempstead Turnpike at Gardiners Avenue in Levittown Saturday evening. She was struck as she attempted to cross the street.

The Nassau County Police Department reported her death 4 1/2 after she was taken to the hospital. She was found with broken arms, broken legs, broken pelvis, and not getting oxygen in the brain.

The police are still looking for the driver, and have described the vehicle involved as a 2011-2013 blue Town country minivan.

The family of the victim is offering a reward for information provided.

  • From 2011 to 2012, there was a 3.7% increase in car accidents involving large trucks
  • Males have accounted for 70% of motor vehicle accidents for several years. 
  • In 2012, 14.13% of motor vehicle fatalities involved pedestrians
  • Motor vehicle fatalities at intersections increased by 5.4% from 2011 to 2012 and demonstrated the biggest increase over any other crash location.
