15 people were injured Tuesday night in a bus crash in Santa Ana

Details of the Santa Ana Bus Accident

According to CBS Los Angeles, the bus was traveling northbound on 17th Street when it was struck by a car that ran a red light at the Fairview intersection.

The bus was then forced into a truck pulling a trailer. The bus finally came to rest on the sidewalk.

Orange County emergency crews transported 15 people to the hospital, including the bus driver and 13 of the buses passengers.

Police are investigating the collision.

Following information provided by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration:

  • In 2011, there were 242 fatal bus accidents resulting in 283 deaths – up from 278 deaths in 2010 and 254 deaths in 2009.
  • Of the fatal crashes recorded in 2011:
    • 97 involved school buses
    • 39 involved cross-country buses
    • 68 involved transit buses
    • 25 involved van based buses
    • 13 involved other or unknown types of buses
  • Another 24,000 people suffered injury due to bus crashes in 2011.
