McKeesport homicide detectives were called to the scene of a pedestrian accident Thursday afternoon in which a 15-year-old was fatally struck by a school bus.

Details of the McKeesport Bus Accident

WPXI reports Deonte Cobbs was fatally injured when he was struck by a school bus in front of McKeesport Area High School. Cobbs died after being rushed to an area hospital.

According to police, the students on the bus saw the entire accident.

This is not the first incident to occur in front of the high school. Last year, reportedly, a similar accident happened in the same vicinity of Thursday’s tragedy.

William Cuadhall, a resident of the area, said “This is a bad area at that time of day. I feel they’re the ones that are putting these people in danger.”

The town has pressed for additional crossing guards in the area, but their efforts have proven futile. Local residents have taken it upon themselves to ensure students’ safety with about 24 parents lining up to help children cross the street on Friday.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • An additional 76,000 pedestrians were injured in 2012, or one injury every 7 minutes.
  • Nearly 20 percent of all children between the ages of 5 and 15 killed in traffic accidents in 2012 were pedestrians.
