WGNTV News is reporting that a 17-year-old high school student from Florida was killed in an accident that happened on Monday when he was hit by a vehicle that was being driven by a crossing guard supervisor.

According to police, 17-year-old Kalen Kirk was attempting to run across Clubhouse Road in order to catch the school bus when he was hit by a vehicle. The boy was then taken to the Lakeland Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the boy has been identified as 60-year-old Shirley Cross, who is a 20-year veteran of the school district who works as the district’s crossing guard supervisor, according to police.

According to deputies from the police department, there was no crosswalk at the intersection and it was dark at the time of the accident. An investigation into the circumstances of the accident remains ongoing.
