2 Construction Workers Killed in Ames Accident
Details of the Ames Accident
Ames Police revealed the names of the two men that died on the construction site to be Javier Hernandez and Alfredo Jarez.
The men were working on a new six-story apartment complex. They were wearing safety harnesses when they fell off the scaffolding, but did not have the harnesses properly fastened.
Ames Police pronounced Javier Hernandez dead at the construction site. Alfredo Jarez made it to the hospital but later passed away.
Local as well as state officials are currently investigating the accident and worksite conditions.
Fatal Construction Accident Statistics
The following information was provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA):
- 4,585 workers were killed at on the job in 2013. This averages to more than 12 work-related deaths per day.
- Two Latino workers die on the job every day throughout the entire year.
- The main causes of death on construction sites are falls, being struck by objects, electrocution, and getting caught in/between objects, respectively. These are known as the Fatal Four.
- The Fatal Four contributed to over half the construction worker deaths in 2013 (57.7%).
