Two bodies have been found in the rubble of what remains of a Minneapolis apartment building that was engulfed in flames Wednesday morning.

Recovery Efforts Delayed

Fire officials received reports of the apartment explosion around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, and stated that the fire had spread throughout the three-story building within minutes.

Accoring to CBS, the body of one victim was found late Thursday while the second was not pulled from the debris until 10 a.m. the following morning – authorities have not released their identities.

Attempts to control the apartment fire and attempts to search the complex for addition victims were hampered by freezing temperatures and the building being too unstable for fire fighters to enter.

In addition to the two deaths, at least another 14 people suffered injuries. Most common were burn injuries, but officials report that some people had suffered broken bones and other trauma as they leapt from the building attempting to escape the inferno.

At least three residents remain in critical condition.

Authorities are still Investigating the Cause of the Fire

  • Fire Chief John Fruetel announced that investigations into the cause of the explosion are ongoing.
  • Authorities suspect a gas explosion may have been the source of the fire due to the nature of the debris field. They also have received statements of an odor at the complex from witnesses.
  • A spokeswoman for CenterPoint Energy refuted the claims claiming that there were no gas leaks in the system nor any reports of suspicious odors made to utility personnel preceding the blast.
