2 Hurt in Chevron Phillips Refinery Fire

Two workers were injured Monday evening after a fire broke out at the Chevron Phillips refinery in Port Arthur.

Details of the Port Arthur Refinery Fire

According to reports, two workers were injured in what Port Arthur authorities are calling a flash fire at the Chevron Phillips refinery.

While the Chevron Phillips has confirmed that the fire took place, officials would not speculate on a possible cause for the incident. The company did state that the situation did not pose a threat to residents in the area.

One of the injured workers was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas where he is recovering.

On the Job Injury Statistics

Following information provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA):

  • 4,628 workers were killed on the job in 2012 – this averages to 89 deaths a week or more than 12 deaths every day.
  • 4,175 of the worker fatalities reported occurred in the private industry.
  • In 2013, OSHA completed a total of 39,228 federal inspections and 50,436 State Plan inspections despite only having about 2,200 inspectors.
  • Among the most frequently cited violations were:
    • Fall protection violations.
    • Failure to meet hazard communication standards.
    • Failure to meet general scaffolding requirements.
    • Failure to provide proper respiratory protection.
    • Improper electrical/wiring methods
