2 Injured in Karnes County Oilfield Explosion

According to KRIS-TV, an explosion at an oilfield in South Texas on Monday resulted in two men being hospitalized with second and third degree burns.

About the Oilfield Explosion

The two men were workers at the Premier Tank Services and were performing welding work on a tanker truck before the explosion happened.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the explosion was a result of the tank not being properly cleaned.

The two workers, aged 37 and 44, were taken to a San Antonio hospital for treatment. The 44- year-old man’s entire body had burns while the 37-year-old only had burns above the waist.

On the Job Injury Statistics

  • According to United States Department of Labor, 4,405 workers were killed on the job in 2013.
  • Data shows that from 2003 to 2010, 823 oil and gas extraction workers were killed on the job. This fatality rate is seven times greater than the rate for all U.S. industries.
  • Worker deaths and injuries are decreasing. Deaths in were about 38 a day in 1970 to 12 a day in 2012. Injuries had 10.9 incidents per 100 workers in 1972 to 3.4 per 100 in 2011.
