2 Killed, 48 Injured in Delaware Bus Crash

Two people were killed and 48 others were injured Sunday when a tour bus crashed on Del. 1 near Red Lion.

About the Fatal Bus Crash

According to USA Today, the AM USA Express tour bus was exiting Del. 1 near Red Lion when it left lost control and crashed, leaving dozens trapped inside the bus.

In all, the bus was carrying 50 people, including the driver, none of which escaped injury. Two women have died as a result of the accident and at least two others were listed in critical condition as of Sunday.

Sixteen ambulances responded to the scene, triaging passengers who had suffered various injuries including neck injuries, cracked ribs, and head trauma. Those with severe injuries were airlifted to area hospitals.

Authorities are still working to determine what caused the bus to crash, but authorities have acknowledged that the incident occurred at a sharp curve which has been the scene of a number of speed-related accidents in the past.

Following information provided by the Delaware State Police:

  • In 2012, Delaware recorded 21,202 auto accidents which resulted in 116 deaths. This marks a 13 percent increased from the 97 deaths recorded in 2011.
  • An additional 7,705 people were injured in these accidents – up from 7,700 in 2011.
  • In 2011, it was determined Delaware had a higher rate of traffic related deaths per population than the national average – 11.31 percent as compared to 11.1 percent.
