2013 Ford Escape Recalled For Third Time

Adam Bitner4 years ago

Since July 2, the new 2013 Ford Escape has been recalled for three separate issues. The latest problem affects about 7,600 vehicles in which the cylinder head cup plug, which holds the engine coolant, may become dislodged resulting in a leak. A loss of engine coolant makes it likely that the engine will overheat, and the ethylene glycol contained in the engine coolant can become extremely flammable if the water in the solution evaporates. Ford was made aware of this issue when an Escape on a lot in Nashville, Tennessee caught fire.

Ford Escape is Ford’s Flagship SUV

  • More than 177,000 Escapes have been sold this year, and more than 27,000 of those vehicles have been recalled according to Reuters.
  • In July, around 8,000 Escapes were recalled for a carpeting defect which interfered with braking and acceleration, potentially causing a crash.
  • Later in the same month, 11,500 Escapes were recalled for a fuel line defect which caused fuels leaks; Ford warned consumers to stop driving the vehicle immediately.
  • The latest recall affects around 7,600 Escapes with the 1.6 Liter EcoBoost engine.

Long History of Defects Plague Ford Escape

  • On July 26, Ford announced a recall of 421,000 Escapes sold from 2001-2004 after the NHTSA opened an investigation into the speed control system on those vehicles.
  • This issue was found to have caused 13 crashes, with one resulting in the death of 17 year-old Saige Bloom of Payson, Arizona.
