2015 Deadliest Year for Austin Motorists

Chelcy Williams11 months ago

A recent analysis places 2015 as the deadliest year on record for traffic fatalities in Austin reports FOX 7.

Number of Austin Accidents “Extraordinarily High”

Cpl. Chad Martinka with the Austin police department said, “The numbers are extraordinarily high compared to any previous year we've ever had.”

In 2015, there were a total of 99 reported traffic deaths, nearly double last year’s total of 63 traffic fatalities.

The city has kept records of traffic fatalities since 1985, which show various fluctuations. However, they have never surged this high.

Many residents attribute the high fatality rate to population increase and urge the city to create more highways to handle the volume.

“We've got this many more people moving into the city every day. We're going to have more crashes and unfortunately more fatalities,” Martinka said.

  • Most of the recorded deaths were reported between 3PM and Midnight.
  • One-third of those killed in auto accidents in 2015 were intoxicated at the time of the accident.
