3 Dead After Indianapolis Church Bus Crash

An article by the Houston Chonicle reports that three are dead after an Indianapolis bus crash Saturday afternoon. The church bus was returning from a summer youth camp 365 miles away before crashing about a mile from its destination.

  • The bus was carrying 37 people, mostly teenagers.
  • The bus was exiting Interstate 465 when the bus driver, Dennis Maurer, says the breaks failed leading to the bus crashing into a median and overturn.
  • The crash resulted in the deaths of youth pastor Chad Phelps, his wife Courtney Phelps, and a chaperone Tonya Weindorf.
  • 24 were taken to hospitals as a result of their injuries, including the Phelps’ two year old son.
  • Of those, six teenagers remained hospitalized until Monday when four were released.
  • One teen remains in critical condition, but is improving.
