3 Dead in California Pedestrian Accident

A California man is facing vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run charges following a pedestrian accident that left three 13-year-old girls dead on Halloween.

About the Halloween Pedestrian Accident

According to Reuters, Jaquinn Raone Bell fled the scene of a fatal pedestrian accident after striking three teenage girls as they walked in a crosswalk in Santa Ana.

The incident resulted in the deaths of twin sisters Lexia and Lexandra Perez and their friend Andrea Gonzales. The three 13-year-olds were out trick-or-treating; all were pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the incident, Bell abandoned his SUV, leaving two children behind in his vehicle. Bell was arrested Sunday at a Motel 6 in Stanton, California.

Bell is now being held on a $1 million bail.

U.S. Pedestrian and Bicycle Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center:

  • 4,743 people were killed in pedestrian accidents in 2012. This averages to more than 12 pedestrian deaths every day.
  • Another 76,000 pedestrian injuries were reported in 2012, roughly one injury every 7 minutes.
  • 726 deaths were attributed motor vehicle v. bicycle accidents, nearly two deaths a day. The number marked an increase from 2011 when 682 bicyclist fatalities were recorded.
