3 Dead in Texas Collision

Three people are dead and several others are injured following a head-on collision along an interstate highway in Central Texas

About the Fatal Head-on Collision

According to KWTX, James Edward Warren, 78, was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Interate 45 when his Chevrolet pickup collided with a Nissan Pathfinder.

The pathfinder was then struck by two other vehicles after coming to rest.

The driver of the Pathfinder, 30-year-old Aaron Mendoza, and one of his passengers, a 14-year-old, were killed in the accident. Several others of the Pathfinders of seven occupants were thrown from the vehicle.

At least five people were airlifted to a nearby hospital due to serious injuries. Warren was also killed in the accident.

The following information was provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT):

  • 3,408 people were killed in collisions in Texas in 2013 – a .26-percent decrease from the 3,417 deaths recorded in 2012.
  • 1,887 deaths were attributed to collisions that occurred in rural areas of the state and 526 were linked to head-on collisions.
  • An additional 232,599 people were injured in auto accidents with 16,807 people suffering serious injuries.
  • Based on available crash data for 2013, TxDOT estimates:
    • One person was killed in an accident in Texas every 2 hours and 34 minutes.
    • One person was injured in an accident every 2 minutes and 16 seconds.
    • A reportable crash occurred every 71 seconds.
