4 Dead, 5 Injured in Refugio Crash

Four people were killed and five others were injured in a head-on collision along Highway 35 in Refugio County on Monday.

Details of the Fatal Refugio Collision

According to the Victoria Advocate, the accident occurred around 5:20 pm when a Nissan pickup traveling south along the highway veered into oncoming traffic.

The Nissan collided with a silver Honda Civic about 8 miles south of Tivoli near Farm-to-Market Road 238 – the vehicles came to rest in the bar ditch on the east side of Highway 35.

All four passengers of the Honda Civic, two adults and two children, were killed in the collision, they have been identified as Rosalinda Albarado, 26, Becelia Gutierrez, 27, Karly Rose Chavez, 7, and Riyan Vellego, 4.

Five occupants of the Nissan pickup were transported to Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi, one transported via helicopter.

Police are still investigating the accident.

  • 3,377 people were killed in auto accidents along Texas roadways in 2013, marking a 1.05 percent decrease from the 3,413 deaths recorded in 2012.
  • An additional 232,041 were injured in traffic collisions with 89,270 people sustaining serious injuries.
  • The majority of traffic fatalities, 55.76 percent, occurred along rural roadways and 523 people were killed in head-on collisions.
  • Using available data, TxDOT was able to estimate that:
    • One person was killed in a traffic collision along a Texas roadway every 2 hours and 36 minutes.
    • One person was injured every 2 minutes and 16 seconds.
    • A reportable crash occurred every 71 seconds.
