4-Year-Old Drowns in Public Pool

Summer camp groups have been banned from three district pools in Glenview, Illinois after the accidental drowning death of a 4-year-old camper. The victim was one of 19 children visiting a Glenview Park District swimming pool as part of the Wesley Child Care Centers summer camp program.

Child Drowning Death Under Investigation

According to the Chicago Tribune, the child was pulled from the swimming pool after a lifeguard spotted his body in the 5-foot-deep section of the pool; he later died at a local hospital. Though the Park District officials state there were 12 life guards stationed at the pool during the drowning, no one could say how the four-year-old ended up in 5 feet of water. Several people who were at the pool did state that the pool was very crowded at the time of the incident.

Officials with the Department of Children and Family Services state that the child was part of a group being chaperoned by eight center employees, exceeding the 8:1 child-to-chaperon ratio the state law requires for day care center field trips.

Children are required to take and pass swim tests; if they fail they must wear life jackets. It is not clear if any of the children from Wesley were wearing life jackets.
