Five people were killed and more than a dozen others were injured after a fire broke out at the Wedgwood Apartments senior-living facility near San Antonio, Texas.

Details of the Fatal Incident

According to CBS-DFW, hundreds of residents were evacuated from the 11-story Castle Hills high-rise Sunday afternoon after a three-alarm fire broke out.

The Associated Press states that five residents have died from injuries sustained in the fire, and an additional 17 residents remain hospitalized. At least one person was reported to be in critical condition.

Further, the Bexar County Fire Marshal has announced that not all of the 216 of the building’s listed renters have been accounted for.

About 150 residents were transported to a local high school via city buses following the blaze. Roughly 100 residents were still occupying the high school Sunday afternoon.

Fire Remains Under Investigation

Currently, there is no word on what started the deadly fire.

Authorities believe the fire originated somewhere on the third floor of the senior-living facility, and spread quickly through the building.

The incident remains under investigation.
