5 Killed, 3 Injured in Cruise Ship Accident

Five cruise ship crew members were killed and three were injured when a cable snapped during a routine lifeboat drill last Sunday (February 11, 2013). According to reports, the cruise ship accident occurred near the Canary Islands, off the shore of Spain.

Crew Members Killed During Routine Drill

The crew members were conducting a routine drill on the lifeboats at about 10:30 a.m. on Sunday when the accident occurred. A lifeboat was lowered to the water without incident; but, as crewmembers hoisted the boat back up, a cable snapped, sending the boat plunging 65 feet into a port. The crew members were trapped inside. Five were killed and three more were injured. The accident remains under investigation.
