5 Students Hospitalized After Suffolk Accident

Several students were hospitalized after their school bus was struck by a passenger vehicle.

About the School Bus Accident

WAVY is reporting that a school bus t-boned a Toyota in Suffolk just after 7 a.m. Thursday morning.  The accident took place at the intersection of Bennetts Pasture and Lee Farm Lane.

According to preliminary reports, the driver of a Toyota pulled in front of the bus that was carrying 39 students to Yeates Middle School. Initially after the paramedics arrived, students that were on the bus did not complain of any injuries.  However, while waiting for a replacement school bus to arrive at the scene five students did complain and were soon taken to the local emergency hospital for evaluation.  

The driver of the Toyota was charged with reckless driving. The accident remains under investigation.

School Bus Accident Statistics

  • According to the National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration (NHTSA), between 2004 and 2013 there have been 340,039 reported motor vehicle crashes that resulted in fatality. 
  • Out of those, 1,344 were school bus related accidents, resulting in roughly 134 fatalities per year. 
  • 71% of those killed in school bus accidents were drivers or passengers of the other vehicles related to the crashes. 
  • 116 child pedestrians were killed after being struck by school buses or while boarding/exiting a school bus.
  • The times of day that seem to result in the most child pedestrian fatality-crashes are between the hours of 7-8 a.m. and 3-4 p.m.
