56 Injured, 1 Woman Dead in Washington School Bus Crash

At least 56 people, including 43 children, were injured, and one woman was killed after a tractor-trailer drifted into oncoming traffic and collided with a school bus and a passenger car on Thursday.

About the Washington School Bus Crash

According to Reuters, the truck driver may have been fatigued when his vehicle crossed over into oncoming traffic and collided with a school bus loaded with children and at least one other passenger vehicle.

56 people were transported to the hospital following the accident, and the driver of a passenger vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased woman’s identity has not been released. Seven people were seriously injured in the collision, including the truck driver and a truck passenger.

The school bus was carrying about 50 Orondo School District students; fortunately, none of the students were critically injured.

  • In 2012, 3,921 people were killed in trucking accidents in the United States. This marked an 4-percent increase over 2011 when 3,781 people were killed.
  • Of those killed in trucking accidents in 2012:
    • 697 were occupants of large trucks
    • 2,843 were occupants of other vehicles
    • 381 were listed as non-occupants including pedestrians and bicyclists
  • An additional 104,000 people were injured in trucking accidents in 2012, marking an 18-percent increase over the 88,000 injuries recorded in 2011.
