Details about the Fatal Hit-and-Run

CBS Local New York is reporting the 7-year-old daughter of Yeimy Pichardo died in her arms after the two of them were hit by an SUV. Yeimy was also injured in the incident.

As CBS Local had originally reported, a couple was accused of trying to cover up the accident that killed the young girl.

33-year-old Fabian Rodrigues Calles was charged with causing and leaving the scene of a fatal accident, and 26-yar-old Joanna Rosas-Alvarez was charged with hindering apprehension, according to the authorities. Both of them are currently being detained without bail.

Sergeant Bruce Miller of the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office stated that the suspects’ car was impounded and, after a few hours of questioning, police were able to take them into custody.

The victim, Shayla, was a student at P.S. 1 in West New York, and was holding her mother’s hand when she was hit by a SUV at the intersection of 61st Street and Van Buren Place at around 8:20 a.m. on Monday morning, according to the authorities.

Surveillance video that was taken at the scene of the accident shows the Chevy Tahoe turning left into the path of Shayla and her mother as they crossed the street. The young girl was killed by the impact of the vehicle and her mother was injured. The video depicts the mother cradling the girl in her arms.

In the video, the driver of the SUV can be seen getting out of the car to look at the girl’s body before getting back into the vehicle and driving off.

Both the driver and the passenger in the SUV were charged and are still in custody, waiting to see a judge soon.
