9 Workers Injured in California Bridge Collapse

Nine people were injured last Friday when a section of a Sothern California freeway collapsed. Officials are investigating the incident.

Details of the Bridge Collapse

According to Reuters, the incident occurred at a building project on the 91 Freeway in Corona, California, severely injuring three workers and resulting in the hospitalization of six others.

A section of an on-ramp bridge was being placed into its position when jacks holding it up failed, authorities said. This caused the deck to drop and hit wooden support beams which hit then hit the workers, resulting in their injuries.

Executive Director Anne Mayer issued a statement saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with these workers and their families”.

Construction Accident Injury Statistics

The following information was provided by the U.S. Occupation Safety and health Administration (OSHA):

  • 4,679 workers were killed on the job in 2014, averaging more than 13 deaths every day.
  • 4,251 of the fatalities were linked to private industry and 874 occurred in construction.
  • Among the leading causes of death at construction sites were:
    • Falls
    • Electrocutions
    • Struck by object
    • Caught-in/between
