Subaru Recalls 400,000 Vehicles for Stalling Issue

Jarod Cassidy1 month ago

Subaru has issued a recalls for nearly 400,000 vehicles in the U.S. to fix two issues that can cause vehicles to stall.

Details of the Subaru Engine Stall Recalls

According to the Star Tribune, the automaker has issued two recalls covering vehicles that can stall while being operated.

The first recall covers 229,000 Outback and Legacy vehicles from the 2018 model year. Recall documents say a software glitch can stop the low-fuel warning light from illuminating and cause the miles-to-empty display inaccurate. This can cause drivers to run out of fuel and stall, possibly resulting in crash.

The second covers 166,000 2012 to 2014 model year Impreza, and BRZ, XV Crosstrek, and Toyota Scion FR-S from the 2013 model years. Reports say engine valve springs can fracture, causing the engines to malfunction or stall.

For both recall, owners can expect to be notified starting this month.

Millions of Vehicles Recalled Every Year?

In 2016, a record high 53.2 million vehicles were recalled in the United States. More than 50 million cars have been recalled in each of the past three years, a stunning fact considering auto recalls over the previous two decades have ranged between 10.2 million and 30.8 million. Many of these recalls were associated with two prominent defects:

  1. Faulty ignition switches equipped in General Motors vehicles (linked to approximately 124 deaths)
  2. Faulty airbags manufactured by Takata Corporation (linked to approximately 16 deaths)

These two recalls have been linked to hundreds of injuries and dozens of deaths, and both have been the subject of congressional hearings and federal investigations. The number of total recall campaigns (927) was also record-breaking in 2016. Sadly, government action came too late for those adversely affected by these defective products.

What Are the Most Common Vehicle Defects?

While the General Motors and Takata recalls have garnished the most attention, it is important to remember that safety defects can occur in any vehicle. Among those most commonly cited by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and automakers are:

  • Defective steering components
  • Door latch failures
  • Defective gas tanks and fuel lines
  • Seat belt failures
  • Defective child seat anchors (LATCH System anchors)
  • Defective airbags
  • Tire defects
  • Weak vehicle structure

Cars, trucks, and SUVs are not the only vehicles that experience recalls. Recalled motorcycles and ATVs have caused many severe injuries and deaths due to manufacturer defects as well.

Harley-Davidson Recalls 238,380 Motorcycles for Clutch Defect

Jarod Cassidy1 month ago

Harley-Davidson announced Tuesday plans to recall roughly 238,300 motorcycles due to clutch problems that could result in an increased risk of crash.

Details of the Harley Davidson Clutch Recall

According to USA Today, the recall affects all model year 2017 and 2018 Harley Davidson Touring, Trike, and CVO Touring models as well as certain 2017 Harley Davidson Softails.

The National Highway Traffic Safety and Transportation Administration (NHTSA) says that the faulty clutches can leak fluid to the point that the clutch does not have enough life to disengage the bikes from gears. The agency says this can cause riders to lose control and crash.

Dealers will install a new secondary clutch actuator piston assembly to resolve the issue. Repairs will be made at no cost owners.

FDA Recalls Popular Blood Pressure Drug for Cancer Risk

Jarod Cassidy1 month ago

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for the popular blood pressure drug irbesartan (Avapro) after determining the medication may be contaminated with a known cancer-causing agent.

About the Ibesartan Recall

According to Fortune, FDA testing of the drug found pills contained the carcinogen N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) which is believed to be a byproduct of the manufacturing process.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, N-nitrosodimethylamine is human carcinogen, meaning it causes cancer in humans. The chemical can be found in water supplies and food in very small amounts.

In June, the FDA also recalled valsartan for NDA contamination. Irbesartan is the first non-valsartan pharmaceutical found by the FDA to contain the NDEA impurity.

Products Covered by the Irbesartan Recall

The following batches are included in the irbesartan recall. All batches were manufactured by ScieGen and distributed to Westminister Pharmaceuticals.

5 Biggest Car Recall of October

Jarod Cassidy1 month ago

October was a busy month for auto recalls. While some recalls involve relatively minor defects, others, like those involving defective Takata airbag inflators, deal with potentially life-threatening consequences. It can be difficult to keep up to speed on all the latest car defects, so here are a list of the most significant recalls issued last month.

2012-2018 Ford Focus Recall

  • # of Vehicle Recalled:3 million
  • Problem: Defective canister purge valves may become stuck in the open position, causing an excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system. This can cause engines to stall while being driven, without warning or an ability to restart the vehicle, resulting in an increased risk of crash.
  • Fix: Ford advises owners to keep the fuel tank at least halfway full until the vehicle’s powertrain modules can be reprogrammed.

2010-2014 Toyota Prius, Prius V

  • # of Vehicle Recalled: 807,000
  • Problem: Vehicles may not enter a fail-safe mode as intended, resulting in loss of power and stalls even when the vehicle is in motion.
  • Fix: Dealers will update the software for all affected vehicles.

2018-2019 Toyota Avalon, Sequoia, Tundra

  • # of Vehicle Recalled: 168,000
  • Problem: A fault with airbag electronic control units may result in side and curtain shield airbags and/or front and knee airbags not deploying in the event of a collision.
  • Fix: Dealers will update the airbag ECU programming for free.

2009-2010 Mazda6

  • # of Vehicle Recalled: 49,000
  • Problem: Malfunctioning powertrain controllers may calls vehicles to stall during deceleration, most often while slowing to a stop, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Fix: Dealers will inspect the cross-member and either install a side member and drain hose and apply wax to protect from rust, or install a drain hose and an improved front cross-member.

2019 Jeep Cherokee

  • # of Vehicle Recalled: 86,000
  • Problem: The front cross-member may corrode after exposure to road salt, weakening the mounting point for the passenger-side lower control arm, unexpectedly changing the steering alignment and increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Fix: Dealers will reflash the powertrain controller for free.

Halloween Safety Tips for Adults

Jarod Cassidy1 month ago

Halloween (and the weekends on either side) mean festivities and fun for adults as well as children. As such, it is important for adults to remain vigilant in their behaviors and actions as the enjoy their holiday festivities and remain aware of the potential hazards that come with the increased pedestrian traffic of Halloween.

Drive Safely This Halloween

The Department of Transportation recorded 106 traffic-related deaths on Halloween night in 2015. More than 25 percent of those deaths were pedestrians, and half of the deaths were associated with drunk drivers.

These deaths are preventable! If you are driving this Halloween, do the following:

  • Slow down when driving through residential neighborhoods, and obey every traffic sign and signal.
  • Many young children trick-or-treating have their minds on candy, not safety. Be more cautious and alert than usual.
  • Drive below the speed limit in heavily trafficked areas to give yourself more time to react if a child darts into the street.
  • Don’t drink and drive! With services like Lyft and Uber, drivers who have had a bit too much to drink have more options than ever when it comes to getting home safe. In addition, many rideshare, taxi, and towing services offer discounted and even free rides to intoxicated people and first-time riders on holidays and holiday weekends. See below:

Tips for Adult Halloween Partygoers

  • Again, if you plan on drinking alcohol, plan on having a designated driver or another ride home. Do not drive drunk, ever.
  • Don’t let others drink and drive or walk home alone after drinking. Find them a sober ride home.
  • Volunteer to drive others home if you have not consumed alcoholic beverages.
