ACE Inhibitors Linked to Severe Allergic Reaction

According to Medpage Today, researchers have found that ACE inhibitors may result in more severe allergic reactions among patients with oral allergy syndrome.

Cases of Severe Allergic Reactions Linked to Anaphylaxis

Angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are used in the treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure.

In one instance, a patient who had been treated with the drug lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril) for approximately ten years suddenly suffered anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal allergic reaction in which an individual’s entire body reacts to an allergen marked by swelling of the face and throat, rash and low blood pressure, after eating an apple.

A second patient developed a tongue angioedema, a condition similar to hives in which swelling occurs under the skin, three times after eating jackfruit and cashews while on the same drug. One of the patients reactions was so severe they required an epinephrine injection.

Researchers' Conclusion

The researchers investigating the reports noted that while oral allergy syndrome rarely results in such severe complications, both angioedema and anaphylaxis have been reported side effects of ACE inhibitors on their own.

They concluded that the ACE inhibitors were acting as a sort of primer to the allergic reactions, making the patients more susceptible to more severe allergic responses. Both patients have sense been moved to treatment with ARB inhibitors.
