Advertising’s Effects On Childhood Obesity
A recent study by Pediatrics looked at the effects of media on children, specifically in how it affects their diet and amount of exercise. The study’s authors warned against placing televisions, DVD players, Blu-Ray players, etc. in a child’s bedroom, which allows children to stay up late watching TV instead of getting the correct amount of sleep. Sleep deprivation, lack of exercise, and constant exposure to advertising for unhealthy foods contribute to a child’s risk for obesity.
Exposed to Harmful Diets
- Children see advertisements for sugary snacks, fast food restaurants, and fatty foods with bright colors and lights, which makes the products extremely attractive to children.
- Parents should be more active in determining how long their children should be watching TV, and what they are watching.
- Kids are exposed to thousands of ads per year which do not promote healthy eating choices.
