Aggressive Driving Among Truck Drivers

susan_harr5 years ago

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines aggressive driving as when “an individual commits a combination of moving traffic offenses so as to endanger other persons or property.” Aggressive driving is bad practice for any driver, but can be especially dangerous for commercial truck drivers.

A new study has found commercial truck drivers who are aggressive on the road are nearly 3 times more likely to be in one or more collisions than those who drive while drowsy. DriveCam, a company that installs high-tech camera equipment to monitor driving, released findings that show how aggressive tendencies, as well as drowsiness and judgment errors, increase the probability of an accident.

The Study:

The study, which analyzed the behaviors of more than 9,000 drivers in the trucking industry between July 2009 and December 2010, took into account several factors:

  • The difference between collision and non-collision drivers' driving conduct was analyzed to identify those with a statistically significant difference.
  • Once problem drivers were identified, the probability of a collision was calculated given the number of times a distraction (aggressiveness, drowsiness, or judgment error) was observed.

When compared to drivers who have not had a collision, drivers involved in one or more collisions are:

  • 6.50 times more likely to exhibit aggressive driving
  • 2.23 times more likely to be drowsy
  • 2.05 times more likely to demonstrate judgment error
