Amtrak Plans to Install Cameras to Monitor Train Engineers
Amtrak is considering applying new technology to their trains following a fatal accident that resulted in eight deaths and nearly 200 injuries earlier this month.
Amtrak to Install Cameras on Train Engines
It is Amtrak’s belief that in-ward facing cameras will serve as a safety and investigative aid. The plan is to install cameras in 70 trains that run on Amtrak’s most frequented routes.
Senator Richard Blumenthal from Connecticut is promoting the installation of similar cameras in all of the United States trains.
Train Derailment Statistics
The following information was provided by the Federal Railroad Administration (FDA):
- The Amtrak derailment that sparked the camera installations resulted in the deaths of eight people and injured around 200.
- On average, there are more than 3,000 train accidents a year.
- These accidents result in death, injury, and property damage.
- More than 80% of railroad crossings don’t have enough warning signals.
